Not By Accident

Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I'd never met him.

You know how there are some people you meet over and over again, and you probably don't really remember the first time you met them, because if you hadn't met them that day, you'd have met them the next day. Or the day after that.

But he and I met by chance. And if we hadn't met that night, I don't think we'd ever have met.

So there must have been a reason. Right?

  2. Interesting question... There's a book - a novel - called - I don't remember what it's called - Choices or Options or some such thing. It's about a young woman, just about to graduate from college in the late '60's or thereabouts. She's out with her boyfriend who's about to propose to her. Just as he's about to propose, she accidentally spills her drink on him, he freaks out and has this big tantrum about it, and they break up. Second chapter, same scene - them at dinner, he's about to propose - but something happens, she doesn't spill the drink, he proposes, she accepts. The rest of the book follows each of those scenarios through the next 10 or 15 years.

SPOILER ALERT - IF YOU WANT TO READ IT, STOP HERE

At the end, her two selves are both on the road, late at night, and pass each other, going in different directions - literally and figuratively. The one who had married is now divorced and going for a career option. The one who had not married has just given up a big career move and is headed toward her lover.

I know this has nothing to do with your question, but this kind of question always makes me think about that book.

    love,

    1. Sofia, thanks for sharing your story. I do sometimes wonder if things would be the same, if missed opportunities come again.
